November 17, 2006 Don Rainone honored for his Iraq Packages Project (The Cabinet Press Bedford Journal LINK). The Bedford Journal published an article on Don Rainone's efforts for our soldiers in Iraq where , with the Rotary Club support, he has sent over 80 packages to a Bedford soldier stationed in Iraq. The current recipient of the packages, Major David Mayham USMC, returned safely home in mid Nov and was able to attend our Reverse Raffle with his wife Gale and their three children. Major Mayham is pictured with Don at the Reverse Raffle event last November 11th. |

August 5, 2006 Rotarian JAY HODES scores a HOLE IN ONE at the 16th hole of the Manchester Country Club (221 yards; par 3). Congratulations to Jay!
July 10-15, 2006 Rotarian Dick Park's grandson, MATT BURROUGHS, won the New Hampshire State Amateur Golf Tournament at Canterbury Woods Golf Club by a staggering margin. Matt scored 10 birdies and 2 eagles in the finals 28 holes. Matt went to trinity High School graduating in 2002 and was a two year member of the North hampton golf team at that time. Now at the University of Hartford, he won his Conference title in his sophomore year and he is now at the Univeristy of South Carolina at Aiken where he has joined a talented group. Congratulations Matt! .... and to a proud gradfather, Dick Park!
May 2006 Rotarian Karen Testerman, NH Magazine article May 2006, "Advocates and Activists - Our Remarkable Women 2006", page 42Karen Testerman: Founder of Cornerstone Policy Research. Her organization touted its support for the "oldest institution known to man and the cornerstone of our families" by promoting the "marriage Protection Amendment" before the New Hampshire Legislature. The group focuses on what she calls the "three-legged stool" of conservative politics: pro-life, pro-gun rights and anti-taxes. (Former) Governor Craig Benson nominated her to the State Commission on Status of Women, but she was voted down by the Executive Council. Testerman is one of the leaders of the Conservative Political Victory Fund, which is trying to move the state GOP further to the right, to correct what she calls "a drift in the party toward the middle, and a loss of distinction between the parties." She says the Fund will support like-minded candidates for state legislature and may target moderate Republicans in the House and Senate. |

~ NOTES FROM OUR IRAQ SOLDIERS ~
July 1, 12, 24, 2006 Messages: Our Iraq packages keep getting delivered (Thanks to Don Rainone!) here is an e-mail recieved from Iraq from Major Dave Mayhan stationed in Iraq (e-mail: Major Don Mayhan USMC):
July 24th Note:
Don,
Got packages #8,9,10,11 yesterday. Thanks so much. I'll take another poll
and see if we have any special requests.
We may have a gap in satelite internet service for a while. The contract
here is unexpectedly about to expire, and we're trying to work a solution.
Not as easy as it seems, so if you don't hear from me for a while, that's
why.
We had a casualty two days ago on patrol. His name is CWO2 Jason Forgash
from California. He's been evacuated to Germany and is awaiting travel to
Bethesda MD. He's alive, but not doing well right now and prognosis is
uncertain. Stomach wound that did some pretty bad damage inside ... lucky
shot that happened to penetrate his flack jacket in the small gap between
the front and side balistic plates. Please keep him in your prayers.
Semper Fi,
Dave.
July 12 Note:
Please pass on to the Pack 5 folks that I got their packages.
We'll
certainly be well-supplied for a while ... shelves are filling up! The slip
inside said "From your friends in Pack 5". The return address info
showed
both the Lavin's and Arico's info. Every bit of it will be helpful.
We continue to stay busy ... we've wrapped up 15 detainees in the past 4
days. Just happened to get some good tips from a couple of people when we
were on our patrols. I'm sure not every one of those will remain detained,
though. For example, we learned about a house where there was supposed to
be a terrorist meeting in the afternoon, and after secretly observing the
house, some people started showing up, but then some started leaving, and
then some came back, so we figured we had to act now before we missed the
chance. That meant that we had to just grab everyone in that area by the
house. I'm sure some of those were innocent, but they'll get released in a
couple of days once the detention facility sorts out the good from the bad.
We also got a tip the next night from a person in town about where an IED
was emplaced, and he showed us, and sure enough ... there it was. We called
in the experts to have them dispose of it, and then the guy showed us where
the person lived that emplaced it, and we captured him. And the next day,
we received information from a cell phone intercept about a bad guy that was
supposed to be delivering some mortars to another guy. So we found that
guy, and though we didn't find the mortars, we did find his "Yahoo"
account
username and password, which we sent up to higher HQ, and they have
apparently found a lot of condemning evidence and helpful information on his
E-mail account.
Okay, have to run,
Dave.
July 1 Note:
Don,
Got packages 3&4 on the same day two days ago (26 June). I guess the
delivery time is inconsistent.. Thanks so much. The ink cartridges will
definately be a big help. I forgot to bring the copier number with me to
the internet room, but I will remember the next time I get on the internet.
The goodies are great ... we sent a bunch out to our position out in sector
along with the coffee. Thanks again for all your support. You're a great
American, and the team here truly appreciates your efforts.
Semper Fi,
Dave.

June 21, 2006 Rotarian BRIAN MOYER
Rotarian BRIAN MOYER was both a Session Chairman and a Presentor at the 2006 NATIONAL BIOTECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE in Boston sponsored by the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS, Arlington VA). Brian's session was on the use of new medical imaging technologies in the development of therapeutic biologic drugs. He talked about the use of medical imaging to follow drugs in the body and how this can be translated into kinetic information to improve dosing and effectiveness of therapies. Congratulations Brian! |
